Measurements for a Suit - Getting Started

What You Need

  • Cloth measuring tape
  • A dress shirt and trousers that fit well
  • A pad of paper and a pen
  • A friend (you can do most measurements solo, but some are easier with a helper)

General Tips

  • Hold the measuring tape comfortably snug, but not tight.
  • Round all measurements to the nearest inch.
  • Unless otherwise stated, you should be able to comfortably put your index finger between the tape and your body.

Before You Start

Essential Measurements

  • To order a custom suit, you’ll need these essentials measurement to make your order. Below is the list of needed measurements with their short description.

1. SHOULDER WIDTH - Measure from the end of your left shoulder to the end of your right shoulder.
2. SLEEVE LENGTH - Measure from where the seams on the shoulder meet to the base of your thumb (located at the wrist joint).
3. CHEST WIDTH - Measure horizontally around the chest, under the armpits, and over your shoulder blades.
4. WAIST WIDTH - Measure horizontally around the widest part of the stomach.
5. BACK LENGTH - Measure vertically down from next to the collar on your jacket to the length required, usually where your knuckles are with your arms naturally hanging down.
6. BICEPS WIDTH - Measure horizontally around the widest part of your flexed biceps under the armpits.
7. WRIST WIDTH - Measure the opening around the wrist.

Pants measurement

1. WAISTLINE WIDTH (Pants)Measure horizontally around your waist, just inside where you like to wear the top of your trousers.
2. CROTCHMeasure from the back of your waistband, down and around, up to the front of your waistband.
3. HIP WIDTHWrap a measuring tape around the widest part of your hips and buttocks.
4. THIGH WIDTHMeasure around the thigh of your trousers as high as you can go just below the crotch.
5. PANTS LENGTHPlace the measuring tape on your waist line, measure from the top of pants waist all along the side pant seam until the bottom of your pants.
6. KNEE WIDTH Measure around the knee directly underneath the kneecap using a soft tape measure or string.
7 a. INSIDE LEG (crotch to knee)Measure from the lowest part of the crotch of your trousers down to middle of your knee.
7 b. INSIDE LEG (knee to bottom) Measure from the middle of your knee down to where you wish the bottom of the trousers to end. 
8. ANKLE/BOTTOM OPENINGMeasure around the ankle to determine the bottom opening on your pants.
